Training and Development
Dr. Cloud conducts training and development workshops and seminars on a variety of topics. These range from small interactive team meetings or retreats, to large gatherings with thousands of attendees. He also designs training and development programs to address leadership, performance, HR and other issues in organizations.
He also conducts seminars and interactive sessions on his books which deal with leadership and business issues: Integrity, The One-Life Solution, and 9 Things You Simply Must Do. Workshops are often integrated into the programming of annual conventions, retreats, or other corporate events, or are specific off-sites for a team, department or organization. They range from a few hours, to all-day, to multi-day designs. Often, they are interactive and Dr. Cloud designs break-out sessions for teams, or smaller groups, to interact with the material or business issues in consultation with the leadership needs. Many times these training sessions are requested to address a particular need in the organization or its culture.
Leadership Workshops Based on Dr. Cloud’s Books
Integrity: The Courage To Meet The Demands of Reality
"Integrity...the best book of the bunch...The tone is engaging, and the principles and writing clear...The
book lays out a transparent way to be a terrific leader by drawing on and improving your best traits."
New York Times,
February 5, 2006
In this workshop, Dr. Cloud unpacks the message of his book Integrity, showing the six areas
of a leader’s makeup that lead to successful performance:
- The ability to create and maintain trust
- The ability to perceive and face reality
- The ability to create results
- The ability to embrace and resolve negative realities
- The ability to cause growth and increase
- The ability to transcend oneself
Attendees will learn how these character traits supercede gifts, talents, and brains, and how these qualities make all other strengths and abilities useable. The workshop helps leaders not only understand themselves and what their next growth step is, but also empowers them to develop other people whom they lead. It connects the dots, showing the real personal attributes that bring about results in the two most important areas of leadership success: getting measurable results, and working well with people. Successful leaders do both: they achieve their mission and leave people better off for having worked with them. Integrity shows how this happens, why it sometimes doesn’t, and what steps we all can take to do better.
The One-Life Solution
The One-Life Solution, Dr. Cloud’s newest book, shows how business and personal success often hinge on one key factor: control. To the extent that a person has control of the two most important resources, time and energy, their goals will be reached. If they have control of their time and energy, their gifts, talents, and other resources will accomplish the rest. The problem is that more and more, people feel like everything and everyone else has control of their time and energy, and not themselves. As a result, they feel like they are working harder, longer and with more chaos, and yet focusing less and less on what is vital to the results they desire. So, their real objectives often are not met.
Dr. Cloud shows how technology has eroded the time and space boundaries that used to protect a person’s time, energy, and focus. For example, you no longer go “to work,” nor do you spend time “at work.” Because of technology, work now follows you everywhere and finds you at any time. Email, PDA’s, and cell phones have made every person subject to being overwhelmed with other people’s agendas, work, and need for attention. Add to that landscape the personal “power drains” where individuals lack the boundaries to set and maintain their own agenda, and it is possible to go through an entire day, week, month, year or more and get pulled away from the things that will make or break your goals and objectives, as well as your personal life.
The One Life Solution shows how this one personal issue affects everyone from the CEO to the receptionist, and can determine results in every area of business:
- Protecting time and energy for what is truly important
- Creating focus and keeping it
- Bringing values to fruition, corporately and personally
- Creating and maintaining good working relationships and culture
- Reaching sales numbers and closing deals
- Negotiating successfully
- Not being controlled by the 20% or dysfunctional people who tend to get 80% of your time and strain
- Dealing successfully with problem employees or co-workers, clients and bosses
- Communicating in difficult situations successfully
- Making sure that the elusive work-life balance is established and kept
- Making it possible to achieve professional success without sacrificing personal and family relationships
In this workshop, Dr. Cloud shows how personal power is not just a hyped message of the 80’s, but essential to everyone’s individual and corporate mission. The keys lie in finding what each person’s “power drains” are, and restoring them. Success lies in not controlling other people, situations, markets or outcomes, but in being able to control oneself. When leaders are able to get back in control of themselves, they will successfully influence other people, situations, markets and outcomes. But it all begins with regaining the self-control that has been lost, with its resulting immeasurable resources of time and energy to focus on what is vital. Business and life success begin with self-control.
Some of the key advice provided includes:
- How to reclaim your power and manage your fears of disagreement, anger, and inferiority. Also advice for learning how to say no and be less dependent on others
- Tools for conducting an audit of your personal resources and analyzing where you should be focusing your energy and talents
- Understanding the 10 “Laws of Boundaries” that govern when and how to make the right decisions with people, in a wide variety of situations
- How to effectively communicate within your boundaries and how to use the right words and phrases no matter what situation you are in
- Tips for better managing your time, space, and every day technology including email, cell phones, and the omnipresent BlackBerry
- Advice for ending relationships and situations which are counterproductive or toxic to every day goals.
This workshop can focus on work related issues only, speak to both the professional and personal. Often organizations desire the work and personal focus for breakouts that might include spouses, or leadership retreats and off-sites as well. The workshop can also be interactive, with discussion questions designed so that small breakout groups or team can work on real business problems around these issues.
9 Things You Simply Must Do
In this workshop, Dr. Cloud walks people through a fascinating study of nine common practices of highly successful people. In observing high-functioning performers for years and years, he continued to see certain patterns of behavior in those individuals who consistently achieved great results personally and professionally. In the book, 9 Things You Simply Must Do, he reveals those behaviors and this workshop unpacks them in the business, leadership and personal contexts.
“Nine Things” shows that successful people….
- Dig It Up---do not allow their true passions and heart’s desires to go unheeded
- Pull The Tooth----do not allow negative energy drains to continue
- Play The Movie---look at each individual choice as part of a larger picture
- Do Something---do not wait for other people or circumstances to change, but do something to bring about the results they desire
- Act Like An Ant---accomplish great things never at once, but in progressive steps
- Hate Well---take a stand against things that endanger what they value
- Don’t Play Fair---go past giving others what they deserve to giving them what they need
- Be Humble---do not try to be more than they are, but they try to be who they really are
- Upset The Right People---do not try to please everyone, but try to please the right ones and upset the ones who need to be upset
This workshop can either be presented with a business and leadership focus, or with an integrated approach for both business and personal life growth. As a result, it is a favorite for business events which include spouses as well.
